A competition brief for Orion Publishing to redesign the book cover for Bernhard Shlink's The Reader.

A focus on overlaying images and deconstructing/ distressing an image that may have once been beautiful to reflect the memory and the changed perception the main character Michael has of Hanna. The use of an old book represents the concealment and revealing of Hanna’s past as a guard through the war. 

Overlaid text shows that she tried to hide her illiteracy throughout her life and could also be viewed as what an illiterate may see when they look at an open book.
